Reversible Sign Necklace: $60

I want to buy everything that Design Glut has in their store!

Yesterday an email popped up in my inbox "Just the lil quirky type of thing I thought you'd like.." said my friend. Boy were they right. He had linked me to the necklace above. I clicked through to the rest of the store and squee'd in delight. Its a geeks jewelry delight!

Below are a couple of pieces that are on my "to buy" list as soon as I get some extra cash!

Circuit Heart Necklace: $60
Open Book Necklace: $60

World Links Necklace: $60

I love jewellery that is slightly different and quirky. Also available is a sausage dog necklace, old style headphone necklace, and a phone booth necklace to name just a few more!

What are you lusting after at the moment?

Inspire Me: Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway on Mad Men
Lately I have been bored with my regular make up style so I decided to tackle something completely different. I started looking for inspiration on blogs, youtube, celebrity sites and everywhere I went the woman that made me stop and look was Christina Hendricks.

The first time I saw here was on Firefly as Saffron. I loved her then but as Joan Holloway on Mad Men she is phenomenal. I also love the fact she is a redhead because you don't see to many of those in hollywood or indeed many women at all who look Ms. Hendricks.

Until two months ago I was rubbish at gel eyeliner but with lots of practice I have gotten better as you can see below. I really enjoyed trying something completely different in terms of my style. I'm wearing lipstick which is a HUGE change for me! Not that long ago I was discussing lipstick with Kim of the amazing Pop Couture (Seriously why are you still here go check her out!) and saying how I never wear them (and her telling me I so should) so I decided with this look to go with Lipstick over Gloss :)

I wish the pictures showed just how different this is. The eyeliner pops so well and my eyelashes look amazing since I am (for once) wearing more than one coat! Non shiny lipstick is also super different and I rather love the extra colour its given me.

I am no Christina Hendricks that is for sure but I am in love with Gel Eyeliner and am certainly going to do this look again now I have gotten over my fear of eyeliner and lipstick.

What about you lovelies? Do you ever feel like stepping out of your comfy box? Who would you like to look like?

New Specs!

I like wearing glasses, everyone in my family wears glasses and considering I work for an optometrist for a living I am well aware of how a new pair of specs can change a persons whole look and sometimes outlook! I got my old pair of glasses about a year ago (right after I started working at my job) and I get loads of compliments on them.

I didn’t take excellent care of them and now they have a scratch on the lens and the colour is coming off a little (not that anyone but me would notice) so I decided I wanted a new pair. My first pair took me 6 weeks to choose. My new pair took me about 6 months. I wanted a really light colour as black frames just washed me out, I wanted them to be simple on the sides as I don’t like bling and I wanted them to match my face perfectly!
A simple task it was not! I tried on at least a hundred pairs of frames, every time one of our brand reps would come in I would try on nearly everything that looked vaguely possible!
Finally these babies came along! Lovely Dior Frames in a gorgeous champagne colour! Perfect. I ordered them on the spot!

So far with my new pair I have received a lot of compliments as well which is nice.
A couple of tips for picking glasses:
  • If the frames looks to big/small ask if it comes in a smaller/bigger size. Most optical frames come in multiple sizes (Sunglasses usually only come in one)
  • Black washes a lot of people out!  If you like the style ask if it comes in a tortoise shell. Tortoise shell acts like a neutral, is more flattering on nearly everyone than black and is readily available in most designer frames!
  • Don’t be overly concerned about how the frame fits when trying it on. If its to loose or slides down your nose the practice will be able to adjust the fit on most frames for you. If your not sure ask if it can be adjusted to fit as some things can be adjusted and somethings can't!
  • Anti Reflective/Multi coatings are worth the extra cost! . They allow the light to pass through the lens which is what makes it way easier to see your eyes. It is more attractive and more comfortable to wear. If you look at my photos you can barely (if at all) see my lenses!
  • I am always honest with customers about whether I think a frame suits them, and I spend a lot of time everyday helping people pick frames. However not every Customer Service Rep is going to be as honest. If you think they are just trying to get you to buy the frame come back with a friend.
  • Try on anything that you like the look of, even if its super different to what you already have. You might look silly or it might look fantastic! You never know til you try them on!

  • Please do not say “You are going to hate me” or “Im really fussy about my glasses” Everyone is! If I had a dollar for every customer who said this to me I would be rather well off!
Finally I had a little old lady tell me that “Picking glasses is like picking a new nose!” By which she meant Glasses are like feature of your face just like your nose so you want to get something that suits you, looks good, is comfy and that you can live with seeing everyday!

Work Style in Progress

Recently my work has changed its dress code, they want us to dress more professionally. I am struggling with this as I don’t fit into any of my old professional clothes, my style has also changed drastically since I was last expected to dress in Office casual and I while I understand dressing professional is expected I don't want to go completely boring!!
So I decided to take my frustration to polyvore! Here is what I came up with. I don't actually own any of the items but it was more a creative exercise to see if I could find things I could see myself wearing!  So these are outfits I wish I could A) afford! B) Pull Off and C) Am fairly certain I could wear to work... with a little tweaking!
Cowl Me:

I love blazers and if I had my way would own one in every colour of the rainbow and in multiple styles (cropped, “boyfriend etc etc) but alas I own few! This look is simple with basic pencil shirt and blazer with a lovely cowl necked t-shirt.
I made it funkier with some patterned tights and the acessories (the earrings has one tiny pair of glasses which appeals no end to the optical geek in me!) Pearls to add some class (because whats classier than pearls) I want to integrate my work and play wardrobes (to expensive to maintain two separate ones!) An option I could probably actually wear to work (albeit cheaper options) barring the tights in that particular pattern as tiny bows aren’t professional enough for work. Perhaps micro fishnets instead.... *ponders*
